The Tree of Semantic Embodiment

Every idea is placed by four questions. What kind of thing is it, in each of four old trees of ideas (its kinds)? Which bodily pattern does its logic follow (its phylum)? Which organ could it not lose (its class)? How does it feed (its niche, a trait of its ecology rather than a rank)? Beside these run its level, the scale of the idea, and its life stage. Each tree also shapes a part of the body; every view below follows the tree you choose.

Read through

A thesaurus is a classification of ideas: Roget set every idea English has a word for under six classes, so that a writer could go from the idea to the word. Its classes give a being its palette, its sections its matter.

I The tree

From the tree’s first division down to every being, through its kinds, then phylum and class. A branch thickens with the beings it carries. Hover over a branch to read it, or click to keep it open; a leaf opens its plate.Tap a branch to walk down it, and tap the path above to go back up; a being opens its plate.

II Key an idea

Place an idea of your own, as a naturalist keys a specimen: its kind in the chosen tree, then its phylum, class and niche.

III The table of kinds and phyla

Each row a kind of the chosen tree that holds a being, each column a phylum. An empty cell is a placement nothing has been bred into yet. The filters fade every being that does not match.
