Witness Balm, the whole specimen
Plate L. Martyrotheria contagiosa, the whole specimen.

The meaning of being treated can be caught from watching another person be relieved, so relief, and harm, travel through a group by witness.

Relief is caught as well as given.

behavior Settles beside a sick creature and glows only when another nearby begins to recover; the glow then passes along the line.

provocation

Who has made you better just by being seen getting better, and whom have you healed that way without knowing?

Each draw is the being derived afresh by the current laws at another seed (laws §11); the chosen one leads (where they sit in the morphospace).

I Dissection

Each organ answers one question about the idea. The framed one, its dispersal, is the dominant organ: the being's class, the one the idea could not lose and stay itself.

Kernel of Witnessed Relief

Fig. 1. Kernel

Sugar pill

inherited from Placebo

Which premise, if it were false, would kill this idea?

The meaning of being treated can change symptoms, and that meaning can be taken from watching someone else be treated and relieved, without receiving anything oneself.1, 4

Boundary of Witnessed Relief

Fig. 2. Boundary

Line of sight

What sets it apart from what it is not, and how does it keep that distinction?

It is set apart from a placebo by needing no remedy of one's own, and from sympathy by acting on the body; it holds only while the other's relief is seen and believed.4

drawn as: meniscus · view: magnified

Intake of Witnessed Relief

Fig. 3. Intake

Waiting room

What must it feed on to work? What has to be present, noticed or supplied?

It feeds on the visible relief of others, on testimony from those healed before, and on the shared attention of waiting rooms, wards and shrines.4, 5

drawn as: wick · view: detached

Mechanism of Witnessed Relief

Fig. 4. Mechanism

Inner pharmacy

How does it turn what it takes in into what it gives out?

Watching another's relief sets up the expectation of one's own, and the body's own systems answer that expectation, more strongly the more the watcher feels with the one watched.4, 2

drawn as: still · view: at work

Output of Witnessed Relief

Fig. 5. Output

Placebo by proxy

What does it make possible, visible or knowable?

It gives relief that spreads through a group without any drug, and it changes the carer and the healer who watch a treatment as well as the patient who receives it.5

Dispersal of Witnessed Relief

Fig. 6. Dispersal

Ex-voto

❦ dominant organinherited from Faith

What part of it travels into other minds, ideas and fields, and by what vector?

It spreads by testimony and example, from one relieved person to the next, and by the rites and walls of thanks that make each cure visible to those who come after.3, 4

drawn as: scent · view: microscope

Decay of Witnessed Relief

Fig. 7. Decay

Dancing plague

What can it not digest, where does it fail, and what does it leave behind for others?

It passes harm as readily as relief; watching someone suffer from a warning teaches the nocebo, and a fear witnessed in a crowd can become an outbreak of symptoms with no cause.6, 7

What it changes in its parents

  • Placebo: Placebo is not a private exchange between one body and one pill; its unit is the room. Every treated person is also a dose for everyone who watches.
  • Faith: Faith's vector, testimony and example, does more than spread belief; it carries effects on the body, so a testimony is also a treatment.

III In the world

Echoes

  • one patient's recovery watched by a whole ward
  • crutches left on the walls of a shrine by those healed before
  • a parent calmed by a child's sham treatment, who then calms the child
  • a fainting or laughing outbreak spreading through a school

If it is right

  1. In a placebo-controlled trial, patients who wait together and can see one another's relief show larger placebo responses than patients treated alone, so the outcomes of patients who can see each other are not independent, as trial statistics assume.
  2. Placebo responses are larger in groups than in private, and larger the more the watcher feels with the one watched.
  3. Side effects spread by the same route; where symptoms are seen or reported in public, more people report them, as after news coverage of a reformulated thyroid drug in New Zealand.
  4. People treated alone, with no one to see them treated, gain less from the meaning of care.

Fruits

study

The shared waiting room

Run the placebo arm of a pain trial in two arrangements, one where patients wait together and can see each other's relief, and one where each waits alone, and compare the responses. If the shared arm responds more, trials that gather their patients together are measuring witness as well as treatment.4

Who in the room is the dose?

institution

The recovery wall

A hospital waiting room where people leaving after treatment can leave a small true trace, an object or a few recorded words, for those who arrive next. It is the shrine's wall of crutches made secular and honest; nothing is faked, since open-label placebos show that relief does not need deception. It answers Placebo's own provocation, a hospital designed for the meaning response.

Can a cure be left behind for the next patient?

practice

Witness hygiene

Rules for treating people in groups so that harm does not spread by sight. At a school vaccination each child is treated out of view of the queue, and anyone who faints recovers out of sight; warnings about side effects are given one to one, together with how many people have none. WHO guidance already advises much of this for vaccination; the being gives it a reason that holds for any treatment given in a group.9, 8

What harm do we pass on by being seen to suffer?

IV Record

How it was bred, from Placebo × Faith

bridge Both are predictions that help make what they predict; what is expected arrives partly because it is expected.

friction Faith assumes its object is real, though unseen, and is wounded by disproof. Placebo's object is known to be empty by the one who gives it, and in open-label use by both.

tension Can trust in something known to be empty still act, and if it can, what is being trusted?

questions neither parent could ask

  1. If testimony carries faith from one believer to the next, can it carry relief from one patient to the next?
  2. What is a faith that knows its object is empty, and works anyway?
  3. A trial gives one group a sugar pill to measure belief; what would be the control arm for a community's shared trust?

pollination: What happens to a remedy made only of meaning when it travels the way faith travels, by witness, from one person to the next?

votive-wall22318A shrine already joins faith and healing; Placebo adds little that Lourdes does not have. This is faith healing again.
witness-balm333211It needs Placebo's premise that meaning alone acts and Faith's vector that meaning passes by witness. Observational placebo analgesia, placebo by proxy and mass sociogenic illness are all measured. It is close to the known idea of social contagion, hence 2 on distance.
testimonial11316Mostly Placebo's own intake, the look and price of the remedy.
feed-of-recoveries22127Nothing shows that a screen passes relief the way a person in the same room does.

crossing: What is a trust given to something one knows to be empty, and why does it still act?

candidateemergencedepthgrounddistancetotal
knowing-trust333211It needs Faith's premise that acting on a trust makes it real and Placebo's finding that the effect survives disclosure. Open-label placebo trials in irritable bowel syndrome and back pain ground it. It is near the open-label placebo itself, hence 2 on distance, but it reaches past medicine to rites and charms.
as-if-rite23229Vaihinger's philosophy of as if already holds it; Placebo adds little to Ritual here.
honest-charm21126The study that found lucky charms improved performance did not replicate.
